Herb MacKenzie died Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas.  He was born November 27, 1946, in Chicago, the son of William D. and Evelyn B. Grote MacKenzie. 

Following graduation, Herb joined the U.S. Navy, serving in the Vietnam War.  After the Navy, he attended Emporia State University.

In the early 1970's, he moved to Blythe, California, and worked in the mining industry as a purchasing agent for 10 years before moving to Garden City in 1982.  He worked for the city of Garden City.  Herb returned to Lawrence in the early 1990's and worked for JCWW before returning to Garden City in 2005 and working as a truck driver.

He was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his companion, Nancy Nance, of the home; and a sister, Elizabelle MacKenzie, Garden City.
