She was born August 20, 1947, in Lawrence, the daughter of Earlan and Winifred Moses Hurley. She received a bachelor's and master's degrees from Kansas University.
Mrs. Smith worked as the variety page editor for the Lawrence Journal-World and published a gardening newsletter called Back in Thyme.
She married Richard M. Smith on January 26, 1969, in Lawrence, he survives of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Alison Reber, Lawrence, and Adrienne Oudenampsen, Amhem Netherlands, a brother Jack L. Hurley, Eagle Rock, MO; and two granddaughters.
